FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Do we do materials and labor pricing?

(A)nswer: No. The reason being that material prices are too dynamic . The best way to use our take off is to send the take
off toyour local lumber yard or building supply house and have them price out the material for you. Labor is the same way.
Though wecan give you the amount of hours a project may require, labor rates throughout the country vary so widely that
it's impossiblefor us to calculate. Again, one may use the hours for each part of the project and apply local labor rates to
obtain a ideal of the costs.

How will the estimate work with our company using sub contractors?

(A)nswer: Most building companies, at one point or another, will use subcontractor(s). The builder or general contractor supplies the sub with a set of blue prints. The sub will get back to the builder with a bid for the job. At this point you are at the mercy of the subcontractor's veracity. For example: you give a concrete sub the foundation plans and he gives you a price and sometimes a cubic yard amount for said job.

We did a large takeoff for a builder in Westport CT. The concrete sub gave the builder a total of 405 yards for the project we at Precision Consulting Industries had a total of 330 yards. That's a total of 75 yards in the sub's favor. It works with just about every aspect of the construction business.

I always seem to be missing material on the job site, and I have to run to the lumber yard to pick them up.This is very time consuming. Will your take-off help solve this problem?

(A)nswer: Our takeoff is designed to halt this headache. You will have all the major materials required for the job, including waste factors. You will know precisely what you will need for each job.

We are a small builder in Ohio and we are having a problem of ordering materials for the jobs. We don't want to have a large amount of materials left on the job site because of theft. Will your take-off help with this?

(A)nswer: Yes. Our take-off is designed from the ground up: first section is the foundation , then the framing in First Second/Third, Garage (Full House Only) Roofing and Miscellaneous Materials. You can order by floors (see example of our Sample Residential in our web site). This will greatly reduce the material left on your job site and you will have a very accurate list of materials required and their costs.

Your Take-offs are very detailed and a bit overwhelming. Any way to simplify them?

(A)nswer: We will not sacrifice accuracy and detail. It defeats the purpose of this service. We save you time and money by having everything you need within the paperwork.

We bid on a lot of jobs. Will your take-off make it easier for us to bid?

(A)nswer: By having an accurate estimate, you will be way ahead of the game. You will have all of the materials required for the job, including the waste factors. With Precision Consulting Industries doing your labor and after the lumber supply houses price out the materials, the bidding process is much easier, allowing you to more accurately determine whether the job is even worth bidding on. However, always remember that a Precision Consulting Industries Estimate will allow you to get a 'middle' price. Your competition may actually get the bid, only because they are cutting themselves to the bone. Our take offs are great for giving you a very good idea of cost, but, be aware that if your competition under bids you by 25%, which is typical, a Precision Consulting Industries estimate will NOT guarantee you the job. However, it will allow you to determine if a job is worth taking on, if there is any profit in it.

How accurate is a Precision Consulting Industries Estimate?

(A)nswer: Precision Consulting Industries 's take offs are known to be very accurate. Just how much really depends on the quality and detail of the blueprints themselves. We are able to scale book prints which have no true scale, but, still have a couple of dimension measurements. We can scale to the 'image' for the house and make a pretty good determination as to the actual dimensions. However, prints which are washed out, missing pages, specifications, elevations, etc., accuracy will suffer, but, the information will still be relevant in most cases. Because Precision Consulting Industries is made up of Builders and Engineers, we can make certain presumptions as to the material which will be needed (within reason) as we can many times 'fill in the blanks.'

What if Precision Consulting Industries makes a mistake?

(A)nswer: If you catch a mistake in a Precision Consulting Industries take-off, we will endeavor to correct the problem within that same day. Unfortunately, we are human, and as careful as we try to be, an occasional mistake can occur. Most are easily corrected in minutes. If we require the prints returned to us, we will pay for their shipping to us and their return to you. If you find that the accuracy was unreasonable, say, 10% or more, and it can be proven, the Estimate is Free of charge for up to 30 days after the invoicing date. After 30 days, we will do another take-off/estimate for free.

After I get the take-off, what do I do with it?

(A)nswer: You would make copies of it and send it off to at least three building supply houses and lumber yards. This will allow you to get all your material pricing. Then, if you have done the labor for you, you would take the 'worker hours' and multiply them to the price/hour charge of each subcontractor required for the project. Now you will have pricing for both materials and the labor.

How are the materials listed in the take-off?

(A)nswer: We try to stay within the convention of how materials are typically sold by most lumber yards and building supply houses. Materials are listed as: square footage, linear footage, cubic yards, board feet, pieces/unit, etc. This allows your material vendor to more easily price out the project.

Who does Precision Consulting Industries do take-offs and estimates for?

(A)nswer: Most anyone who's involved in the construction process. We've worked for: new home owners, project managers, general contractors, some architects, lumber yards, building supply houses, institutions, large corporations, etc.

How do I get my prints to you and schedule for a project?

(A)nswer: It's really very easy. Simply call us on one of our toll free CT line (if you're out of town) and talk to 'Ron.' He will schedule you in, and discuss any aspects of your project. Once that is done, you can express the prints to us (do not use standard post as they can take up to a week or more for delivery to us). Make sure you fill out and print or fax a copy of the pricing and sign off sheet with the prints with your credit card number and related information. Also make sure you put down the project 'due date' and that you 'sign off' on the space provided. We can not start work on any project without a VALID credit card number. Checks are fine, but, there will be four days required to for the check to clear if out of the state of Connecticut.

How long has Precision Consulting Industries been doing take-offs and estimates?

(A)nswer: Quite a while, actually. Precision Consulting Industries has 15-30 years of building experience in both residential and commercial areas. Precision Consulting Industries was officially started in 1993, and has done thousands of take-offs and estimates since. In the 'take-off' and 'estimation' business, a company which does not deliver on the goods would never last this long. We do and we have.

What do you charge?

(A)nswer: We are very flexible and have a wide variety of different pricing and take-off / estimate tiers. Please see: Residential Pricing for all related information.
